Hand Signals

Unlike motorized vehicles, bicyclists do not have the luxury of easily making their intentions known to everyone. The most efficient way a bicyclist can make their movements predictable to other road users is by hand signaling.

To let others know whether you will be changing lanes or turning, be sure to use your left hand/arm. If you decide to use your right arm to signal, that’s okay too.

To demonstrate, this illustration from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) shows the kinds of hand and arm motions that bicyclists use.

If the use of hand signaling fails to announce your intentions, do not hesitate to shout or yell to alert others. Check out more about how you can be safe while bicycling, by visiting the NHTSA website for additional safety tips.
